Winter Carnival Combines Off-the-Wall Fun, Athletic Endeavors & Good Causes in Crested Butte, Colorado - Feb. 3 - 5, 2006. Celebrate with the 20th Annual Alley Loop Nordic Marathon, Big Air, Disco Ice Skating, Dog Chute & Taste of the Alley

With a reputation for hosting off-the-wall events and world-class athletic competitions, Crested Butte, Colorado, will pull out all stops for Winter Carnival Weekend, Feb. 3 - 5, 2006. Winter Carnival features true Crested Butte fun, including the 20th Annual Alley Loop Nordic Marathon, ìDog Chuteî K-9 Benefit Race, disco ice skating, Belgian Breweryís Taste of the Alley, ìBig-Airî competition on Elk Avenue, and the Adaptive Sports Centerís silent auction, with President Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter on hand to close the auction.

The weekend kicks off with a little canine companion fun. On Friday, Feb. 3, the ìDog Chuteî K-9 Benefit Race will give Rover a chance to race the clock while trying to curb hunger through a gauntlet of yummy treats. Starting at 6:30 p.m., this extremely funny event is open to all friendly dogs and benefits dog-accessible Nordic trails, P.A.W.S of Crested Butte, and the Gunnison Valley Animal Welfare League. Pre-registration is encouraged visiting http://www.cbnordic.org starting in January or by calling the Nordic Center at (970) 349-1707. Location to be announced.

Next, itís all about being groovy with the Crested Butte Avalanche Centerís Disco Ice Skating from 8 - 11 p.m. at the Crested Butte Nordic Center Ice Rink. Fans of 1970s clothes, disco tunes and ice skates and the merely curious are welcome to wear a costume and join the fun.

The 20th Annual Alley Loop Nordic Marathon, presented on Feb. 4 by Coldwell Banker Bighorn Realty, is the premiere event of the Crested Butte Nordic Center and the highest-altitude Nordic marathon in the United States. The American Birkebeiner qualifying race starts and finishes on Elk Avenue, one of Coloradoís largest National Historic Districts, and winds its way through alleyways, streets and the trail system located on the outskirts of this historic mining town.

Alley Loop combines Crested Butteís laid back atmosphere with the localsí play-hard nature to create an event that embraces all abilities and ages competing on skate or classic skis. Course lengths of 1K, 3K, 5K, 10K, 12K, 21K, and 42K are offered, allowing all skill levels to participate. Atomic Skis and cash prizes will be awarded to the overall winners and the ìThe Croatianî (the lucky racer who finishes with the exact Median race time).

Alley Loop also is Crested Butteís giant winter costume party. Be on the look-out for ìHot Dog Man,î ìSee-Through Genie,î and plenty of cowboys and cowgirls under 4-feet tall! All racers will receive a race bag and official 20th Annual Alley Loop T-shirt designed by local artist Kate Seely.
