San Diego, CA

San Diego is an ideal destination for a family vacation. No matter what season the weather is sure to be pleasant and comfortable, with sunshine guaranteed for the ultimate family fun experience. The family friendly activities in San Diego will keep the whole family entertained. With family friendly hotel and lodging options ranging from affordable to extravagant and conveniently located to remotely tucked away, you’re sure to experience a formidable family vacation that you’ll reminisce about for years. Of all the travel destinations in the world, San Diego is one of the very best for families.

San Diego Fun in the Sun

Tourism has always been a staple for San Diego, attracting traveling families from around the United State, Europe and further abroad. Offering an ideal climate and scenic panorama, San Diego has been an ever-popular family friendly vacation destination, one of the best in the United States.

San Diego is an outdoor family vacation paradise with beautiful coastal setting, sparkling beaches, gorgeous parks and vibrant downtown. During your San Diego family vacation, take advantage of the warm weather, pleasant sunshine, and miles and miles of coastline by bringing the family to the beach. Just gather your beach towels, grab plenty of sunscreen, fill up your water bottles, stuff a few snacks in your beach bag, and get ready for some serious family fun under the sun. Choose a family friendly beach with life guards to help you keep an eye on the little ones and to ease your mind. For more water activities, turn to San Diego’s reservoirs for a variety of outdoors activities like boating, fishing, and hiking—inexpensive excursions for your family vacation. El Capitan reservoir is the place to bring your jet ski, and Lake Hodges has the perfect setting to windsurf.

Mission Trails Regional Park encompasses over 5,000 acres of recreation areas for hiking and camping, and provides guided tours which most children can keep up on. While Mission Bay Park is the largest man-made aquatic park in the country it also offers walking and jogging trails, playgrounds, picnicking, and cook-out areas, and is a popular spot for sailing model yachts or flying kites. Pick up your family’s favorite treats from a local deli, or grab a bag of charcoal and have a barbecue in this lovely aquatic park, ideal for families on a budget.

For families that enjoy golf, the City of San Diego Park & Recreational Department operates three municipal courses: Torrey Pines, Balboa Park and the Mission Bay Golf Course and Practice Center. The Balboa Park Golf Complex includes an 18-hole and 9-hole course, both of which provide stunning views of downtown San Diego and Coronado. Mission Bay Golf Course is the only night lighted public course and the lights are extinguished at 10pm.

San Diego Wildlife Adventures

Within the borders of Balboa Park is the world famous San Diego Zoo. Your family will be awestruck by the largest and most progressive zoo in the world, boasting more than 800 species and over 4000 animals including the giant panda. Enjoy a guided tour or an overhead gondola lift to appreciate the many exhibits which feature animals and native plant life as they exist in the wild.

The San Diego Wild Animal Park, located in the San Pasqual Valley area, is also operated by the San Diego Zoo. The park differs from the zoo in that the animals are in a natural environment and the park serves as a breeding area and game preserve. Trams will move your family through the expansive open range enclosures and, for an extra charge, a tethered balloon ride will give your family an aerial view of the exhibits. This is the highlight of many San Diego family vacations.

San Diego’s Sea World provides an unforgettable marine life encounter for the whole family. Located on the ocean’s edge, the many shows, rides and mysteries to be discovered in this aquatic playground will definitely leave every family member with a smile. Don’t forget to ask about any special exhibits or discounts for families.

San Diego’s Balboa Park

Within San Diego is a 1,200 acre outdoor gem called Balboa Park. Its dedication to public recreation is evident in the natural vegetation and open areas as well as the cultural attractions it encompasses. Here families will find museums such as the San Diego Museum of Art, the San Diego Museum of Man, San Diego Air & Space Museum, and the San Diego Model Railroad Museum to name a few. Enjoy a miniature railroad tour through four acres of Balboa Park. The Morley Field Sports Complex provides many sporting opportunities which include tennis, swimming, archery, disc golf, and cycling. Athletic fields, jogging trails and an eighteen station fitness course are also available to keep family travelers in shape. Enjoy a family stroll through the many gardens. You could easily spend two days in this San Diego family vacation highlight. The Old Globe Theatre, the Starlight Bowl and the Spreckels Organ Pavilion are performing arts venues where families can enjoy live theatre, light opera and organ recitals. This may be the perfect night out for parents, leaving your children in the care of your family hotel’s babysitting service or family friend.

San Diego Events

Three major sport centers operate within the city; Qualcomm Stadium, home to the San Diego Chargers, San Diego University Aztecs and the Holiday Bowl; PetCo Park, home of the San Diego Padres; and the San Diego Sports Arena with sporting events from boxing to ice hockey, hosts concerts and offers family entertainment.

Imperial Beach just south of San Diego has beautiful white sand beaches and hosts the annual U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition. This July event beckons sandcastle building teams to compete for cash prizes. The intricacies and nature-defying designs will captivate family travelers of all ages. This is one of our editor’s “must-see” picks for families vacationing in San Diego.
