Summer Reading

Acadia Cool Stuff Every Kid Should Know

The summer is in full swing by now BBQ's, pool parties and sunburns are occurring in earnest these days. Plus, the kids are out of school! All I can say is, finally! One way I have recently discovered to make sure your kids are as excited for your getaway as you are - and to keep them thinking over the break from school is a great new series called "Cool Stuff Every Kid Should Know". These books have caught my eye because of the family friendly destinations they feature, the wonderful and engaging content, and the educational aspect they present, cleverly disguised as fun facts and trivia.

Developed by Kate Boehm Jerome, this series of kids books is the perfect companion for your child on a family vacation. With many family friendly destinations in mind, Acadia Publishing has essentially put together a guidebook your kids will use to experience your destination. Currently, the series consists of the cities of Buffalo, Tampa, Orlando, Cincinnati, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, and Charleston, which are all wonderful destination spots for summer family vacations that have fun and interesting aspects that your kid can now learn about.

Kate Boehm Jerome has tapped into what kids find most interesting about a new (or old!) vacation spot the trivia! With around 30 pages per book, "Cool Stuff Every Kid Should Know" is bursting with historical facts, quirky stories, and fun knowledge about the city and state you're vacationing to. With explanations of diaper wearing horses, unique city nicknames (Porkopolis? I'm curious about that one!) and an introduction to the Tallest Cowboy in Texas, it's really no wonder that your kids will take a cover-to-cover approach when reading this delightful series.

Of course, as a parent, I must also point out the educational value of such an engaging series especially during the summer, when it can be most difficult to interest your kids in reading. The colorful layout and pictures are a perfect balance to the interesting content, allowing your kids to really connect with and enjoy the stories and information. The subject matter will keep them involved and excited about your family vacation destination, as well as giving them fun facts, trivia and information to share with the rest of the family during your vacation together!

If you happen to be planning a trip to one of the cities featured in one of the "Cool Stuff Every Kid Should Know" books, I would highly recommend picking it up on your way out of town for your kids to enjoy. It's never too early to start getting little globe trekkers excited about travel, and I suspect you parents may be sneaking a peek at this insightful book before your summer is over.

To explore the "Cool Stuff Every Kids Should Know" series, hop over to their website, Arcadia Kids Books, and find the perfect companion for your kids this summer!

Happy Travels,

Thank you that is such wonderful advice...we too have had many family vacations that have started out with trips to explore possible new colleges and have ended up being such fun with all our family involved. You can certainly see some wonderful and unexpected sights on these road trips.

Thank you Pamela for all your ideas. You have inspired my wife and I to take a long road trip this summer while taking our son to his new college. We are planning a different route there this time and hope to take in the many wonderful sights along the way there.

Mallard Cross, Oregon
