The Rainforest Alliance works to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior.

Rainforest Alliance also supports and promotes certification in sustainable tourism as a tool for improvement and market competitiveness and we work together with local certification schemes form the countries we are working with. We are leading the Sustainable Tourism Certification Network of the Americas as a way of facilitating the communication between programs and also standardize a minimum of criteria acceptable in order to be part of the network and recognized as a verifiable program. We are currently working in the second edition of a catalog that includes all the certified businesses in the continent.

Travel Tip For Today

Bring one pair of comfortable walking shoes as well as a pair of sandals or Tevas. Before you leave home, break in your new shoes so you're not uncomfortable on the road.

Explore Mother Nature - take a family hike. L

ooking back, some of my most rewarding family vacations were rooted near water. There’s something about sunshine and swimming that puts a smile on every family member’s face, but it doesn’t have to be the ocean. This time of the season, many family resorts (complete with pools, hot tubs, spas and the like) are anxious to fill up their rooms and are willing to offer great discounts and special packages to draw in their guests. So if packing up and going far seems like too much effort, join the tourists in your area and hit up your local hot spots. Major metros offer lots of family fun and some of those midtown hotels with all the trimmings are offering more than fair rates while being close to the national parks, lakes and oceans your family might be looking for in these final months of summer.

National parks offer breath taking beauty, like this waterfall.

Finally, I am very fond of country hideaways often serviced by bed and breakfasts or rustic lodges with cabins. Why not take a long weekend or a whole week to enjoy family time, make some fun memories, and reconnect with your loved ones—all with minimal effort and expense at a local family-friendly lodging. You could also enjoy the last of summer by visiting a nearby National Park; it’s a great way to combine history and heritage with family fun!

With national parks in every state, there are nearly endless possibilities for family adventures. Consider touring Niagara Falls from either boat or air to take in the beautiful sights, and then relax at a lodging facility in either New York or Ontario that offers complete family entertainment. On the west coast, Yosemite National Park offers families beautiful landscapes perfect for camping, hiking, fishing, swimming and other active recreational activities. You’ll also find plenty of lodging options from bed and breakfasts, cabins, lodges and more. If you’ve always wanted to visit the Big Island, here’s your chance! The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is one that will spike the interest of any member of your family. Stay at one of the family friendly resorts throughout the state, relax in the tropical atmosphere, and enjoy your time together in the beautiful island paradise.

No matter what you do to round out this summer, make sure you focus on each other, don’t sweat the small stuff, and truly enjoy these precious and fleeting family vacations.

A great family get-a-way: The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Thank you that is such wonderful advice...we too have had many family vacations that have started out with trips to explore possible new colleges and have ended up being such fun with all our family involved. You can certainly see some wonderful and unexpected sights on these road trips.

Thank you Pamela for all your ideas. You have inspired my wife and I to take a long road trip this summer while taking our son to his new college. We are planning a different route there this time and hope to take in the many wonderful sights along the way there.
