U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE OVERSEAS INFORMATION SERVICES

You don't want to fly into a flood or war zone on your long-awaited overseas vacation. Fortunately, the U. S. Department of State keeps tabs on hazardous conditions--both natural and man-made--around the world. To help you avoid dangerous or unstable areas, they offer a variety of brochures and updates that you can easily access via phone, fax or computer modem.

The Department of State's travel warnings update you on countries where conditions make travel hazardous for Americans. These warnings will alert you to political instability and violence, health risks such as epidemics, and natural disasters or dangerous weather conditions.

Consular Information Sheets for each country provide basic information on entry requirements, medical services, crime and safety, areas of instability, U.S. embassy location and hours, and information from the Federal Aviation Administration regarding the safety of air travel in-country.

The Department also offers a list of more than 100 brochures covering a wide range of subjects. Titles include Rwandan adoptions, tips for Americans living abroad, judicial assistance in Luxembourg, and tips for business travelers in Nigeria.

1. If you have a fax machine, the Department's automated fax system can be reached by dialing 202-647-3000 from your fax machine. The system will walk you through the process, prompting you to request an index (handy list of all the publications available) or traveler's warnings, to request consular information sheets on your country of choice, or to order articles from the index.

2. To listen to Consular Information Sheets or Travel Warnings on the phone, dial 202-647-5225.

3. The URL for the State Department is .

4. You can also call 1-800-323-4000 for more information regarding Consular Information Sheets and Travel Warnings available through the Official Airlines Guide (OAG) on many online computer services.
