SHERATON KEY LARGO RESORT
97000 South Overseas Highway
Key Largo, Florida 33037
Key Largo Resort is offering environmental excursions, also known as "envirotours," from its private beach to the Florida Everglades and the back country of Florida Bay.
Working in conjunction with Caribbean Watersports, the resort's beachfront concession, the Sheraton offers guests a truly unique boat tour through an ecosystem few have visited in the past. "Most people don't realize that the Florida Everglades begin just off the Sheraton's doorstep," said Caribbean Watersports' Ginny Sproul, an environmentalist and captain of the specially constructed Zodiac watercraft. "Now we can safely take people into this fragile environment and teach them about the plant and sea life found there."
The 17-foot, inflatable Zodiac watercraft with a rigid hull is a favorite of environmental groups like Greenpeace because of its speed, agility and low noise levels. The Zodiac can maneuver equally well over open bays, through shallow creeks and up to deserted island beaches.
Captain Ginny notes that participants visit the secluded islands of The Everglades National Park during the one- to two-hour tours and learn about all aspects of the ecosystem, including plant, animal, fish and human inhabitants; what is protected and/or endangered; how the Everglades affect Florida's weather, etc.
In addition to the ecological water tours, the Sheraton Key Largo Resort offers those interested in the environment a truly unique hotel experience. Built on a government-protected "hardwood hammock," the Sheraton is the nation's only resort set in a tropical forest. When not sunning or swimming, guests stroll the lighted and marked walkways, learning about the Keys' natural vegetation, including gumbo limbo and lignum vitae trees.
At less than an hour's drive from Miami International Airport, the Sheraton Key Largo Resort is a popular and convenient destination for leisure travelers. Guests stay in one of the property's 200 well appointed guestrooms, all complete with large balconies (many with spectacular views of Florida Bay) and luxurious amenities. The Sheraton has a private beach, every conceivable watersport, two pools, tennis courts, fitness center, and myriad dining and entertainment options.|
