FIRST COLONY INN
6720 South Virginia Dare Trail
Nags Head, North Carolina 27959
The Outer Banks' only historic B&B inn offers comfortably elegant accommodation and real Southern hospitality at the beach. The Lawrences saved this handsome shingle-style building wrapped by unique continuous double verandas by moving it three and a half miles; set it in five landscaped acres, did a complete historic rehabilitation, and placed it in the National Register of Historic Places.
Rooms are individually appointed with English antiques and traditional furnishings and king, queen, or twin beds. Some are tall four-posters, and some are canopied with hand-tied lace. Children are accommodated in daybeds or trundle beds. All rooms have television, telephone, and individual climate control with remote. Most have wet bars with microwaves or kitchenettes with dishwashers. All have private tiled baths with heavy towels on heated towel bars and English toiletries, and some have Jacuzzi whirlpool tubs. Sitting rooms or comfortable seating areas, books, plants, and old local photographs and antique prints lend a home-like touch.
Begin your day at the First Colony with breakfast in sunny breakfast room, a bountiful buffet including such specialties as ham and cheese braid hot from the oven, then stroll to the ocean for beachcombing, fishing, swimming, or a long walk by the surf. Windsurf, hang glide, sail, take an aerial tour or a deep-sea fishing trip, or go on a dolphin-watching expedition. Perhaps you'd rather rock on the veranda with a good book from the library or laze by the secluded pool.
Spend the afternoon at the NC Aquarium or the Elizabeth II (a replica sixteenth-century ship) or stroll through the Elizabethan Gardens; then return for tea. After dinner at a fine restaurant, enjoy the sunset over Roanoke Sound from the veranda with a little wine and cheese, then play chess or bridge or help with the jigsaw puzzle in the library. See the Lost Colony, the country's oldest outdoor drama, one night.
First Colony is located conveniently near Fort Raleigh (the Lost Colony) and the Wright Brothers Memorial, and Jockey's Ridge (tallest dune on the East Coast).
