THE CHARLES HOTEL AT HARVARD SQUARE
The original works of realist art that grace the Charles Hotel's public areas and guest rooms represent the largest such art acquisition program by an American hotel. Cambridge cityscape paintings at the first floor entrance reflect the unique atmosphere of Harvard Square outside, while more expansive landscapes commissioned for the upper floors emphasize the Charles River and its natural environments.
Room furnishings blend contemporary and antique design elements for comfort and unassuming elegance. Sit at a traditional rustic-style writing desk as you hook up your portable computer to the built-in telephone modem (or rent a computer terminal from the hotel). Terry cloth robes and a luxurious down quilt on the bed, as well as an honor bar and 24-hour room service, invite relaxation.
Rarities, the hotel's dining room, serves a splendid array of American dishes, all with a distinctive New England difference. The name comes from an early botanical study, New England Rarities Discovered. The decor features turn-of-the-century botanical prints, and chef Craig Anderson incorporates regional herbs and ingredients in his cuisine. An example of the seasonal menu dinner offering is lobster medallions with spinach fettucine, artichoke salad with orange and lime vinaigrette, a mixed grill of game with foie gras and a bottle of late-harvest zinfandel, followed by a selection from the pastry display.
Le Pli Health Spa and Salon boasts state-of-the-art exercise equipment and a glass-enclosed, heated lap pool as well as European spa treatments. Elle magazine reported, "No American hotel has a more complete beauty-and-fitness facility."
Within minutes of downtown Boston and Logan International Airport, the Charles Hotel offers its guests the unique atmosphere of Harvard Square: colorful shops and cafes, folk and jazz clubs including the hotel's Regattabar, theater, and a view of Harvard University's stately halls.
The Charles Hotel was entirely refurbished in 1991--same color schemes and textures--just refreshed.
