Middlebury is a Shire Town (county seat) in the middle of dairy country, and the home of Middlebury College. It is the quintessential quaint, historic, picturesque New England town, including a bandstand on the village green. Middlebury Inn overlooks that village green within the Green Mountains of Robert Frost country. A community landmark since 1827, the Inn was an imposing 3-story brick Georgian-style hostelry, but has grown to encompass several adjoining buildings. Choose between an antique motif or a contemporary room. Dining choices vary with the season. Plentiful New England fare is offered in the Founders Room and Stewart Library. A favorite starter is the Tempura Woodland Mushrooms, and then consider the Venison Madeira and Roast Duck entrees. Elegant candlelight buffets are frequent delights not to be missed, from the served appetizer and sherbet courses to the finishing touch of a fingerbowl. In warm weather, the wide sweeping porch hosts lunch or dinner while overseeing "goings on" on the village green. Stop for a drink in the Tavern and sample a New England native cocktail, the Candied Apple. The Inn's staff is dedicated to gracious hospitality, and that begins with the warm welcome. While you're enjoying central Vermont, it's nice to have the Middlebury to come home to, especially after a day of skiing in the New England winterscape.
