This recipe comes from Taughannock Farms Inn of Trumansburg which is set among some of central New York State's most spectacular scenery: Taughannock Falls and Gorge and Cayuga Lake. ORANGE DATE BREAD Rind of 1 orange 1 cup water 1/2 cup chopped dates 3/4 cup sugar 2 tbsp butter 1 egg, beaten 1 cup (2 sticks) butter 2 cups all-purpose flour 2 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp salt Preheat oven to 350. Generously butter an 8" by 4" loaf pan. Mix together the first 3 ingredients in a saucepan and boil gently. Add sugar and butter, stir until dissolved and remove from heat. When cooled, stir in remaining ingredients. Put in loaf pan and bake for about 45 minutes or until it tests done. Serve sliced, with cream cheese. Yields one loaf, which serves 8 to 10.
