KAMP WANNAKOMBAK Keeps Kids Happy at MARQUIS VILLAS EPIC RESORT In Palm Springs, California

The third summer season for Kamp Wannakombak, the popular children's program at the Marquis Villas Epic Resort, is set to open with imaginative programs and new activities.

Says camp director Kelly Bertheola, "With our new in-room scavenger hunt, parents checking in are given camp information and a registration form. The child receives a list of items to look for in the room. He or she brings them to camp and learns to put them together to form a key chain or necklace," she explains.

Another innovation is the KOMBAK KAMPERS KLUB in which children will receive a small award on their fifth visit to camp. Five additional visits will earn another award.

Kamp Wannakombak fills a large, brightly-decorated room that is separated into an area for smaller children where Disney videos, coloring books and simple crafts are offered, and one for arts and crafts including sand art and creative beading that interest older children. Walls are lined with photographs of children so that returning campers can look for their picture, which they take home as a souvenir.

Animals that provide entertainment as well as learning experiences are frequent visitors to the Kamp. "We have Loveheart the bunny and Rosie the tarantula, as well as Elvis and Botcho, desert iguanas," Bertheola says. A visit to the Children's Discovery Museum of the Desert becomes an adventure in exploration for older children.

A ratio of one counselor for every ten children is maintained, with a ratio of one to eight for children ages two to four. An electric eye at the room's entrance activates a security buzzer so that personnel know whenever a child enters or leaves the room.

As an after-camp wind-down, from 7:30-8:30pm on Friday and Saturday evenings, children can attend an hour-long post-dinner music fest in the lobby. Pianist Carolyn Cline is a former Miss America runner-up and talent competition winner for her piano and song performance skills.

The Marquis Villas Epic Resort has the only resort children's camp in the city, and the only one in the area for which THERE IS NO CHARGE. ALL CRAFTS ARE FREE, including items that children take home with them. Also offered are discount tickets for area entertainment including the Oasis Water Park, Palm Springs Aerial Tramway and Camelot Park miniature golf.

The camp is open daily from 1-5pm during Summer months, and on weekends and holidays year-round except Easter Sunday. It serves children aged 2 to 12. Younger children may attend camp if a parent stays with them.

Another child-friendly program at the Marquis is KIDS EAT FREE, which allows children 12 and under to receive one complimentary breakfast or dinner from the children's menu for each adult entree ordered in the Garden Court Restaurant.
